For starters, did anyone hear about the 5.4 magnitude Earthquake just off the coast of the Dominican Republic? I didn't.

For anyone Interested the link to the earthquake report is here

I guess stuff that isn't devastating doesn't make the news...anyway a quick writeup on the quake is here (they got the magnitude wrong...don't ask me).

very little damage was done, thankfully, so I guess it doesn't draw media interest.

Now to return to Japan, at least peripherally, one should know that they sit on the Ring of Fire, and their quake made for a very interesting graphic (below) but first for those who don't know what the ring of fire is:

Now then, an interesting pic which ought to catch people's attention:

Yeah, that is a little odd. Is Cali in danger? Yeah, probably, there is evidently a 99.7% chance that Cali will have a 6.7+ magintude earthquake in the next 30 years.

I am by no means knowledgeable enough to draw solid conclusions, and if anyone reading this knows more than me I would certainly appreciate being corrected, however a few guesses as to what this would mean:

1) any city without a bay protecting it along the coast, within a reasonable distance of the quake, will have tsunami related issues

2) the usual earthquake effects will occur: collapsed bridges, buildings etc. However I would imagine that if it does indeed strike off the coast there will be little that is knocked down, seeing as everything has been built to withstand quakes and the epicenter would probably be fairly far from a city.

Harry,

well so far as I can see there are two ways you could take that song

1) in the non-PG way, which I think you are intending

2) in the sense that the firey ring represents the bond of people's hearts in marriage. Which is much better for CAPS.

I meant it as a joke and I was hoping people would overlook the first meaning ;)

Hey Daniel-
The "Ring of Fire" has always referred to volcanic activity. It's Plate Tectonics and no surprise that quakes go hand in hand along these "faults".

Best.

Also, Chile had a 5.8 today, almost no news on that, but it happened just off of Valpraiso (spelling?).

And on the idea that a bay will protect a community by the water, wrong.  American Samoa's harbor was built in one of the naturally deepest bays in the world, it didn't stop the tsunami from destroying Pago Pago harbor.  If your familiar with wave propogation and coastal processes, you'd be familiar with those processes.
