The TMF Special Report...Revealed! (Part I)

January 07, 2014 – Comments (7) | RELATED TICKERS: SWIR

As everybody who forgot to give a spam email when applying has, I've seen the emails in my inbox, advertising reallly awesome stocks that require subscriptions to their services to get.

 It's maddening. Absolutely maddening.

So I figured I could help everyone discover what stock TMF was referring to when they talked about the tech that could kill the very internet I'm using to type this article.

Yes, that internet, not the other one at the grocery store.

Basically, the new "Internet of Things" is going to be a multi-trillion dollar industry, and there's a stock you can pick that will get you ridiculous gains. It sounds kind of shifty, obviously. And I didn't want to pay up for an unsure thing. So I took the clues the article handed to me to find the company.

Clue one: they're up 141% (awesome) since 1-1-13.

And that graph, straight from the website, says their current stock price is in the $16-$19 range.

At this moment, I discovered a website that had done all the work for me. I simply put those two up to show how they were feeding you misinformation.

This secret stock is Sierra Wireless, stockgumshoe says. (thanks, stockgumshoe!)

Well, does SWIR fit the bill?

1.8 Price/Sales (advertised as "under two" in the ad), 200+% growth (this is why I didn't find it at first), and a stock price of twenty-five bucks. That's right, Motley Fool is giving you wrong information so you don't try to do it.

In other words, don't try to hyperanalyze graphs, instead focusing on the news they feed you. Also, do not overspecify when trying to get the stock on your stock screeners.

I actually recommend you read the TMF article. And this as well, because it's also providing an insight on it.

So, there's TMF's dream stock. In part two, I'll analyze the stock itself, and in part three, I'll take a look at the Internet of Everything they're pitching.

Thanks SL,

As a former H.G. sub I have nothing but good things to say about their service however the Carnival Barker ads do give me the creeps. At a glance SWIR is at least interesting. I'm very curious to see your future blogs about the company and investment potential (or lack there of). I've got an open mind and put SWIR on my CAPS watchlist.

@MKArch: Thanks for commenting! I might not have time to look at it until the weekend, but putting SWIR on your watchlist until then is a good move.

@thbasic: Yes. CalAmp's Price-Sales is 4.5, nowhere near "under 2". Thanks for the questions!

With absolutely NO info on SWIR, I will add this caveat.  In 2008, I chose one of these carnival barker stocks, Dawson Geophysical, and one of the Hidden Gems recommendations, Buffalo Wild Wings.  I put half of a Roth IRA into each.  The result:  Dawson tanked and, as of this writing, Buffalo Wild Wings is a 6 bagger having gone into and then back out of the March 2009 drop without ever slowing.  I have not invested in any of the "Buy This Stock" suggestions since then.  I do however invest in TMF newsletter suggestions from time to time.

Dawson Geophysical...ouch. Good thing Buffalo made up for most of your losses.

Thanks for pitching in as always!

What 'ouch?'  I will have you know that Every Company in the industry was going to need Dawson Geophysical!  I should be able to put ALL of my money into DWSN and retire early because it was going to take off in such a spectacular fashion

Rule number 15 - When it comes to advice from investment firms, you get what you pay for...and it is worth just about that much.
