TheFoxForce5Contest is OVAHH!!!

August 17, 2013 – Comments (14) | RELATED TICKERS: F , O , X

Well that was fun, much obliged to all the participants. A special shout out goes to my buddy blesto for cranking out the midweekly updates on the Randomness board-

Welp we managed to avoid the beanie hat, that's why I set the rules up like I did. Hey I love a nice stock trading in single digits skyrocketing as much as the next guy, but you can't have a portfolio of just high risk fliers. Thus the safety net of dividends.

Here's how the contest started-

I planted 5 fiat based two dollar bills on the homeless dude that I won betting on I'llhaveanother in the derby. Oddly enough I don't see him anymore, I suspect he compounded the sudden windfall and retired in Florida. (Sidenote I was in line at the liquor store one day, and the dude pulls out a wad of cash you could choke a horse with).

Also made a donation of 5 fiat based ten dollar bills to the Salvation Army. Your probably thinking- Harry you cheap bastage, you probably made fifty beans in dividends while typing this. First I wish, but as I've stated before- I'm not a wealthy man but aspire to become one. So that involves living within one's means and giving only what one can afford

Our rank was 32.79  50,572 out of 75,247 (wow, who knew that many people played caps. Hey all you wallflowers out there throw a rec my way once in a while, Just Sayin' ;)

31 of the 41 picks ended with a positive stock gain.

And our All Time Best-

Drumroll please-

Woohooo!!! Astounding cheers from the audience, 5 elephants juggle 12 monkeys, rockettes kick up their heels, Walt Disneys frozen head flutters above.

Mega's pick of GNW  went from $5.25 pr/sh to $12.59 for an outstanding +139.81% stock gain. (now if they could just get thier act together and start paying a dividend;)

I happen to know that Mega rolled large in RL (just like Scruffy would). So that is even more reason to bow down to Mega and his stock picking mastery.

Congrats Man.

Again thank you to all the contestants, final results can be found here-

I made the executive decision to leave all picks open. I think this is a really good watchlist and own MTGE for myself and FSC for my parents, based on my doing research for the contest. Maybe I'll do a yearly recap just to see what happens with our picks. Also might do a FOXFORCEJOURNAL for the remaining ten stocks if they hit the green in stock gain.

That's all for now, but always remember-

The rest of ya'll can stay foxy, with my gains I'm going to stay mink. :)

I'm a little embarassed that I won the contest by disregarding the spirit of the "dividend paying contest" and picking a non-dividend paying stock. #5 SSW deserves some credit for actually raising their dividend, while GNW and INFN didn't pay a dividend and NOK and VE cut theirs.

My second choice for the contest was going to be Apple since they actually pay a dividend. But they're down 39% so I guess I got lucky.

To celebrate, I'm going to give $200 to my local Food Bank. The end result will look something like this:

Cheers everyone and keep your cool in the market!

I'm glad I did better in RL than in the contest. Timely closure and repurchase. Now just waiting for them to pay me my $0.15.

Still like them and will post a new blog when they get the information posted so I can see where they actually are now.

They still have their 2, 2010 vessels chartered at basically break even to Maresk, but bit the bullet and sold the 3 "buckets of rust" that were only breaking even, and bought 2, 2006 vessels coming "online this quarter".

That means they will have 10 vessels chartered at around $27,000 per day for about $24M a quarter in revenue.

Will be interesting to see how much they borrowed to buy the 2 new ones at $47M each, who they borrowed it from, and at what rate.

If you haven't looked at the Teacherman333 Caps page, you might want to.

Not my picks (don't own any of them), but 111 stocks picked by JohnCLeven base on ROE criteria over 10 years.

Doing great so far.

Good luck to all.

Third best call currently is the one made on JCOM. I saw the founder in a German talkshow in 2000 or so, may have been this one. Those were the times when a musician from East Germany becomes founder of a company that went on to become JCOM, now with a market capitalisation of around $2.4B.

articles from around the time I saw him in that talkshow.

The dividend and split adjusted low (December 26, 2000) was at a little under $0.21 btw. $0.21 -> $51.25 is a rally of around 24305% :)

Hey Legend, grat's on having the highest paying dividend at contest end.

Not sure about the next one yet. First I'd have to pick a movie to theme it around.

Any thoughts?

I'd say the second most viewed movie after Pulp Fiction in my lifetime is the Blues Brothers (or maybe shawshank redemption)

Not sure how I would theme a contest around either of the two.

Well all I can add is if you call it a "dividend contest" make it so people have to pick stocks paying dividends ;p

Blues Brothers would be an awesome theme:

You are on a mission from God to find the best value stocks before the bank forecloses on the orphanage at (whatever date you pick for the end of the contest).

Congrats MegaShort! I'm so glad Harry is going to leave the picks open for a longer view of their performance! I'm still totally behind my MSFT pick long term!!  Look forward to a new 'contest' when ever it can be put together. Thanks to everyone for your 'insights'! ~ mkp
