Twitter removing hashtags = New Coke style fiasco?

March 20, 2014 – Comments (2) | RELATED TICKERS: FB , TWTR

Not sure if this is actually going to happen or not.

But if so, it could be similar to the New Coke fiasco.

Coke changed their flavor profile to resemble something closer to the flavor of Pepsi, in order to attract new customers.

What happened? Well, very few Pepsi people switched to Coke, and LOTS and LOTS of loyal Coke drinkers were outraged. Coke basically made an insanely dumb decision, and alienated their existing base as a result.

Twitter is now considering changing their "social media recipie" to be more like Facebook's by removing hashtags and @replies in favor of Facebook-like "mentions." (Per the valuewalk article)

If this occurs, Twitter may alienate their base in the same kind of was that Coke once did.

For an already overvalued company, (with extremely rosy future growth expectations baked-in) such a bluder of a decision could result in a radical drop in share price.

Disclosure: I am red downthumb FB and TWTR.

That would be incredibly stupid. Twitter is doing great, whereas young kids are abandoning FB - it is on the way out.

I once saw a comment on Twitter which said, "Facebook is like Twitter for moms". So true.
