People are angry at GameStop because they removed a coupon from a factory sealed package and sold it as new. It would be like if you paid for pizza with three toppings, but the driver ate all the pepperoni on the way over.

Yes, but it appears you can return your video game and demand
a sealed copy from Gamestop.

They do have a 7 day return policy for any reason including that you just do not like the game.

So, I don't see this as such a big deal, albeit a really dumb mistake by Gamstop to open up sealed game boxes.

Also, www.kongregate.com,  has ONLIVE coupon advertisements all over the place.   The difference here is that ONLIVE paid for the privelidge to advertise their business versus attempting to get free advertisement without the knowledge of Gamestop.

Both parties were wrong in this but Gamestop should have just stopped the sales of the game, waited for the coupon free versions, and then provide those to Customers..

or sell the broken seal copies for a few bucks less.

@TMFpcmart03,

Your analysis is completly wrong.

If I order a Pizza with 3 toppings....I would get a pizza with 3 toppings....  With the ANCHOVIE topping thrown onto the pizza by some 3rd party against the knowledge of the Pizza Store having been removed.

But what if you ordered the three-topping pizza because of the anchovies the third party added on? Wouldn't you be pissed, and maybe feel cheated? Had the pizza place told you before you paid that it didn't offer the anchovie deal, then you could have chosen whether or not you still wanted to order from that particular establishment.

My problem with your original post, is it kind of missed the point of why consumers were angry. The problem wasn't that GameStop refused to include the coupon, it was that the company pulled it and hoped no one would notice.  You've already said what I thought game stop should have done, pull the game immediately, or discount the opened copies. Heck, it might have been able to sell the opened games at full price if it had released a statement announcing its plans before it started opening boxes. It would have probably lost a few sales, but I'd bet a lot of consumers would have bought from them anyway.

Well, I never knew about the Anchovies when I purchased a copy of Deus Ex.  I even went so far as to speak to Gamestop employees and they told me exactly what I would be getting if I bought either the Digital or Physical version of the game.

The fact is....Video Gamers were TOLD by Gamestop in-store or on their Website or on IMPULSE or elsewhere....They were told what the contents were.

Their were any number of photographs of what was in the PIZZA and any number product descriptions.

There was no attempt by Gamestop to promise ANCHOVIES and take it a way from customers.

Unfortunately, I know one can not expect that I represent the average customer.  I do not.

As an investor I am among the ELITE knowledgeble shoppers out there....I am also not a youngster KID whose new to Video Game buying...

So I understand the whole business created some confusion.

With that said...  Gamestop gave customers exactly what was promised....They told/showed them the contents of the package.

At no time anywhere is it that Gamestop ever said ONLIVE COUPON included.

Another thing.... As an investor of Gamestop I do not exclusively shop at Gamestop for my Game Buying.

Just bought 3 video games yesterday at Amazon.

So yes I have an automatic bias in talking about Gamestop, since I am currently taking a LONG bet on the stock and company.

However, even so...I've spent thousands of dollars already
at competitors like Best Buy or shopped at E-Bay or etc.

You're missing one key fact.  Square Enix publicly announced the coupon. Granted, they probably should have done so earlier to give GameStop time to object.  http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/deus-ex-3-unofficial-title/1189856p1.html.  By removing the coupon, GameStop no longer sold the product that the original publisher intended. If GameStop wanted to pull the coupon, then it was obligated to say, "We pulled this coupon" rather than pretend the offer never existed in the first place.

You might also want to read this story, which explains the whole situation in detail.

I read every story on this and the "announcement" was not part of Square Enix's visit to Gamestop Headquarters to go over the contents of Deus Ex and what would be included in the purchase.

So at no time did Gamestop Employees or Management have any idea that the coupon was included.

Announcements can be made all the time in any form and fashion.

They are meaningless if they aren't made directly to the retailers.

Oh and I rarely almost NEVER log onto Gamespy.

So again....It is rather insanely microscopic to say SquareEnix announced it and pull up the GameSpy article.

Announced it my rear end.

I can go and announce something as well in a local city newspaper.....Doubt you'll be aware of it though but if you are caught by Surprise I can say.....Hey... I announced it!!!!
