Here is the WSJ headline on Yahoo:

Holiday Shopping Off to Strong Start

But if you read a little further it states:

Unprecedented 'Door-Buster' Deals Send Sales Up Significantly Over Last Year, but Crowds Thin on Saturday......

Doing a little channel checking with a buddy in the retail business......SUNDAY WAS EVEN WORSE!!!!!!!  If you are a headline reader....you might be mislead.  Let's see how the mainstream press tries to spin this as the week progresses.

Notice Yahoo printed this headline Sunday night just before midnight:

[$$] Holiday Shopping Off to Strong Start at The Wall Street Journal Online(Sun 11:58pm)

Headlines can be misleading.

Looks like your buddy missed the boat, we'll have to wait til thursday tho for the full numbers, but apparently the weekend actually did show gains from the year-ago period.

Demon,

I think once you factor the discounting, the weekend really sucked the big banana.

My buddy owns retail stores, he is friends with all the managers in the mall.  I think is data, at least at the local level, is much more accurate than the nonsense you read from Wall Street.

All the stores I've been in the last few weeks looked like ghost towns, although I didn't go out on Black Fri.
