Welcome to Prosperity

August 26, 2009 – Comments (7)

Good morning friends, and welcome to Prosperity.  As you look around you'll notice that a great deal has changed since the last time you were here.   Before we get off the bus, please make sure your front and back life saving plates are secured in your vest.  Don't want any shrapnel to accidentally rip through your torso like a hot knife through butter.  I know they're heavy, but what's another 40 pounds added to your body weight?

"Whoever wishes peace among peoples must fight statism." - Ludwig Von Mises

Quickly make your way to the gate, where the Ugandan security guard will check your credentials.  Even Ugandans have found a better life here in Prosperity.  Soon the whole world will be Prosperous.  After they are done, shuffle up to the main palace grounds.  That friendly security officer from the US Army with the loaded M16 will make sure to double check your credentials.  Submit to a search of your belongings.  They will also take your fingerprints and start a databse file on you.  Security is important at Prosperity.  Take a moment now to read and comprehend the United States Central Command Mission Statement:

With national and international partners, U.S. Central Command promotes cooperation among nations, responds to crises, and deters or defeats state and nonstate aggression, and supports development and, when necessary, reconstruction in order to establish the conditions for regional security, stability, and prosperity.

Notice all the tanks around the perimeter.  We will spread Prosperity to the neighborhood, even if we have to shell them back to the stone age in order to do it.

"What the incompatibility of war and capitalism really means is that war and high civilization are incompatible." - Mises

That smell you are currently taking in is nothing to worry about.  Here at Prosperity we are still working out the details of modern plumbing.  A little team spirit and a can-do-attitude will guide the way to proper toilet engineering eventually. As some of you may recognize, we are now on the grounds of an old royal palace of the Baath party.

"If some peoples pretend that history or geography gives them the right to subjugate other races, nations, or peoples, there can be no peace." - Mises

Security is important at Prosperity.  You can't have any Prosperity without a good Security plan.  What good would it do?  So that is why you are now surrounded on all sides by 20 foot high walls.  You can clearly see the four guard towers overlooking the walls, (and my word what a view those guards have!), and the triple strand concertina wire at the top.  Soon this whole neighborhood will be basking in Prosperity, but first we must watch everything they do.  That's the Security aspect.  These things take time.

"The way to eternal peace does not lead through strengthening state and central power, as socialism strives for." - Mises

As we walk through the main palace grounds, notice that everything in the palace has already been looted.  There really isn't much to see here, except all those databases containing the fingerprints and identification numbers of everyone here at Prosperity, as well as any outsiders we can catch.  Let's move on.

"The salesman thanks the customer for patronizing his shop and asks him to come again. But the socialists say: Be grateful to Hitler, render thanks to Stalin; be nice and submissive, then the great man will be kind to you later too." - Mises

Outside the main palace, we are building quite a Prosperous community here. Look at all these amazing structures.  In just nine years, we have planned and built up this entire fortification.  Of course, there is still work to do.  Yes, I realize that most of these structures are just 10'x10' wooden sheds and trailers.  All we need to make this place great is a little more team spirit and a can-do-attitude!  Prosperity is definitely on its way.  Our problem was merely a lack of inspiration among the staff.  Those people have been dealt with.  They weren't team players.

"A society that chooses between capitalism and socialism does not choose between two social systems; it chooses between social cooperation and the disintegration of society. Socialism: is not an alternative to capitalism; it is an alternative to any system under which men can live as human beings." - Mises

Finally, be sure never to step outside of the grounds of Prosperity without an armed convoy.  You need a minimum of four tactical humvees, each with a 50 caliber rifle on top.  This is the cost of Prosperity.  Some people, it is clear, do not want Prosperity.  So we have to deal with that.  It's unfortunate but we may have to force Prosperity on everyone eventually.

[Forward Operating Base Prosperity is an actual base in Iraq, situated in an urban hell hole in Baghdad.  When I found out about it, I almost fell out my chair laughing at the name.  It seems that Orwell has found his way to Baghdad.]

VA Update:

As reported by the Miami Herald, more the 10,000 of our nation’s military veterans were exposed to possibly infectious body fluids while undergoing endoscopic procedures at three different VA hospitals in the Southeast.

Agency officials with the Veterans Administration will answer to serious endoscopic equipment cleaning and sterilization mistakes which affected more than 10,000 veterans at hospitals in Miami, Floirda; Murfreesboro, Tennessee; and Augusta, Georgia. In February 2009, hospital officials began sending letters to thousands of patients, who may have been exposed to HIV and Hepatitis infected endoscopy equipment, urging they receive prompt testing for HIV, Hepatitis C, and Hepatitis B infections. Government officials with the VA reported six veterans tested positive for HIV. The government’s report also indicated 13 positive Hepatitis B infections and 34 positive Hepatitis C infections in patients who were exposed to the infected equipment.

HIV and Hepatitis are viral infections with no known cure and routinely lead to death in infected patients. These viral infections are known to spread through infectious body fluids.

The real crime here is that Congress and various government agencies are in charge of investigating this travesty.- Michael Gaddy

VA Update 2:

Veterans Wrongly Told They Have ALS:

At least 1,200 veterans across the country have been mistakenly told by the Veterans Administration that they suffer from a fatal neurological disease.

One of the leaders of a Gulf War veterans group says panicked veterans from Alabama, Florida, Kansas, North Carolina, West Virginia and Wyoming have contacted the group about the error.

Denise Nichols, the vice president of the National Gulf War Resource Center, says the VA is blaming a coding error for the mistake.

Update 3

The Swine Flu Is A Threat If We Say It Is

By Bill Sardi

A day before the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) is due to release a report on the dire condition of American banks and likely depletion of its own reserve fund, Federal officials have chosen to release a report claiming the upcoming H1N1 swine flu poses a “serious health threat” – even though the summer version of the swine flu is dissipating.

Issuance of the Federal report, dated August 7, 2009, appears to have been delayed till Monday, August 24.

The H1N1 swine flu now in circulation is not gaining momentum.  According to published records by the Centers for Disease Control, the summer H1N1 swine flu peaked in the last week of May 2009 and affects about 1/4th the number in late August as it did at the end of May.

The report appears to cause undue alarm, estimating 30,000-90,000 deaths as the summer version of the swine flu becomes more virulent in upcoming winter months.  But this death forecast is wide ranging.  Federal officials frequently cite 36,000 annual deaths from the seasonal flu, so it may be no deadlier than any other flu season.  Why all the alarm bells?

Federal officials couched the grim predictions in their report by saying it was a “possible” scenario, not a “predictable” one.  The report says the 2009-H1N1 flu is unlikely to resemble the deadly flu pandemic of 1918-19, but nearly $9 billion has been spent to prepare for a flu season that may fizzle in its severity as last year’s did.

Reuters quotes Federal officials that the winter H1N1 swine flu will be a “new strain against which few people have immunity,” yet no evidence is provided that the summer version of the H1N1 swine flu has mutated into a different strain, at least not yet.

Nor do health officials fully reveal how vaccines being rushed into production now will accurately match the flu strain in circulation this October when the first doses of the flu vaccine become available.

This is the first year mock vaccines are being put into production – a new practice to approve the method of manufacturing the flu vaccine and then inserting the prevalent virus in circulation just days before the vaccine becomes available.  Europe will fully rely upon an H1N1 swine flu vaccine made under this mock manufacturing model.  The U.S. is exercising more caution.

The UK-based newspaper Guardian reports that up to 60% of British doctors may refuse swine flu vaccination over concerns that safety trials are being rushed.

Health officials say it would take considerable time for the current H1N1 swine flu to have become the triple reassortment flu strain it is today.  They claim it must have been in circulation for some time prior to the March 2009 outbreak in Mexico.  But just exactly how it escaped earlier detection by the many flu surveillance stations across the globe goes unexplained.

The idea of a man-made flu virus is strongly denied.  Yet somehow the outbreak of the H1N1 summer swine flu coincided with the announcement that a French company intends to establish a vaccine manufacturing plant in Mexico.  French President Nicolas Sarkozy visited with Mexican President Felipe Calderon just days prior to the flu outbreak there.

Worldwide concern grew over the possibility vaccine makers are purposefully introducing new strains of flu into the population, or lacing vaccines with more virulent and deadly strains, when one manufacturer was caught inserting a more deadly but poorly transmitted form of the H5N1 flu strain into a faster spreading but less lethal H1N1 flu vaccine.  Fortunately a vaccine distributor in Europe pre-tested the vaccine in ferrets and found it killed all of the animals.  The vaccine was destroyed.

Also unexplained is why a Texas branch of the Federal Emergency Management Agency began flu vaccination exercises prior to the March announcement of the flu outbreak in Mexico.

The FDIC faces a spiraling number of bank failures and it may have already tapped into its line of credit at the US Treasury, which is also out of funds, facing $1.8 trillion in over-spending this year.  Asian bankers are not likely to loan that much money to the U.S. this year in fear of fanning inflation.  So the US Treasury and Federal Reserve must resort to printing the money, a practice that will surely diminish the purchasing power of the US dollar.  Federal tax revenues are rapidly declining as more and more tax payers face job layoffs and home foreclosures.

Governments are known to distract their citizens from the realities of a collapsing economy by issuing declarations of war or other contrived emergencies.  A flu pandemic would serve as a perfect cover for the sour economy, brought on by loose lending practices and other excesses that were not opposed or detected by regulators.

Daily Reading List (a few articles that caught my eye today):

Involuntary Medical Servitude by Maria Martins

Maria, a 22 year ER MD, lays waste to the idea that medical practice can be legislated to adhere to the vagarities of the "common good"

It is a betrayal of our duty to our patient to use any consideration of some greater social good defined by the government to alter the best course of action for the patient. Our customer rightly expects us in the doctor-patient relationship to have his welfare as our absolute priority. It is immoral to use "average number of years of life a procedure would buy" — or any other government-inspired social utility — as a justification to limit the options we offer our patient. An attorney would be considered unethical if he used consideration of the greater good of society to influence his representation of an accused murderer.

China Secures Oil Rights in Iraq

Iraq has approved a deal that would see China's Sinopec Group acquire controversial oil rights in northern Iraq through its purchase of Swiss oil giant Addax Petroleum, Chinese media said Wednesday.

Terror in Baghdad

The sixth anniversary of the murder of Sergio Vieira de Mello, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in Baghdad, fell last week. It was marked by a series of huge explosions across the city, killing dozens of civilians and injuring many more. The brutality and nihilism that the attacks exemplified were horrifyingly familiar. Yet while the destructiveness of terrorism in Iraq is undimmed, the country's politics and security have altered dramatically in six years. The change explains much about the evolution of the terrorists' campaign.

More Stupider Economics

Humor from the Mogambo Guru had an interview that had the title “Why so many conspiracy theories?” which was intriguing enough, but made funny when they editorialized “Dominant Social Theme: Are people getting stupider?”

Unfortunately, they do not answer this question directly or indirectly, although my research did discover, thanks to a secret code, threatening and perhaps prophetic threats in the text of the article, most of them being “Die, Mogambo” and “Taser your testicles, Mogambo”.

'Laissez-Faire Caused the Depression'

More talking heads spouting more nonsense about the laissez-faire Hoover government.  Didn't Robert Higgs and Murray Rothbard already expose these fallacies?

I haven't gotten to all the comments yet, but the actual article is very good. You said Orwell but this rings more true of Kafka's In the Penal Colony. A great work of literature btw if you have not read it.

Another great post, I truly enjoyed reading it, along with all of the others. Your insight is much appreciated and most helpful when I think about my journey from left socialism through elementary, high school, and college, to right socialism after graduating from college, and now into Libertarianism.

Thanks to people like you, Dare, and other Libertarians that realize while personal freedom comes with great responsibility, it is far greater that any decision someone else can make for you whether they think it is for your own good or not.

Thanks Dare!  Those VA links are just a reference for myself, the next time some poor deluded socialist tells me the VA is the most wonderful health care in the world.

That's great!  It was actually a very painful process for me, going from right socialism to libertarianism.  I had to come to grips that I was full of crap for years, that I had been lied to, that I had actually promoted a system that was slowly enslaving me and terrorizing millions overseas.  That was a tough pill to swallow.  There are actually days that I considered having my Marine Corps tattoo surgically removed or altered.  I can afford it, but a part of me remembered the lessons on individual achievement the Marines taught.

"Nothing in life worth having comes easy. If it was easy, everyone would have it." - A lesson imparted upon me over and over during boot camp by Drill Instructor Sgt Puebla.  It's about the most anti-socialist message I've ever received from a government agent.

Of all the services, they are seem to be the only one left that embraces individual freedom of action to some extent.  So I'll leave it on my arm and remember that.
