Unrelated to stocks or finance...but I just had to get an idea what other ppl experience and why ppl do it? I currently work for a foreign investment bank in NY, I would say there are about 200 ppl here in the NY office.  So your bound not to interact with everyone or know everyone’s name...however I like to be cordial and say good morning or hello to everyone in the pantry or passing by someone walking around the company.  What I don’t get is why someone would not reply back in kind…for some ppl it’s like I’m speaking an entirely different language?!?!  I have a few theories why ppl act that way.

1.      They are totally shocked anyone would greet them and they don’t know what to do?

2.     They are miserable working here and disdain everything and anyone working at the company.

3.     They are just pricks and see everyone else lower than them and don’t want to associate with anyone outside their “click”

Just curious to know if anyone else has every encountered this?  I guess this is more of a bigger company phenomenon than a smaller one.  I guess it comes down to how passionate ppl are working at the company or just coming here to collect a paycheck.

Sound off fools...I'd love to get your feedback.

Trying to determine why any individual reacts the way they do is nearly impossible. Your 1,2 &3 are just scratching the surface. One of the hardest things to do is accepting the fact that people think differently; I don't mean that they just come to different conclusions but, that they take different paths to get there.

I sometimes find it mentally difficult to buy stock in businesses that I would never use. There are many very successful business where I am not the target customer;). I do try to avoid this kind of bias in my investing.

Maybe they are just "lost in thought", and don't even notice that you are saying "hello".

If they are on their way somewhere, they may be going over things in their head that they want to discuss or do when they get there.

Some environments are just not given to casual friendliness.

I wouldn't read more into it than is likely there.

Hello and have a great day. :)

Hello ! I'm a friendly extrovert who tends to greet everyone.

Be the Crachit to somebody's Scrooge. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't! Often it takes time.

Another theory is that some people are preoccupied and only are social when they have to be--leading others to assume they are snobs, when introverted and distracted with business concerns is closer to truth.

(Perhaps you look like you're a realtor or an IRS person and tap into others' primal fears of those professions. Just teasing.)

Have a great weekend! At least my cat is very affirming, but I think he may be a little self-serving.

Are they all americans? If in Russia you don't talk/ greet people unless you know them personally. If you do, they'll think you are either carzy or want something from them.I can't speak for other countries with authority, but europeans seem to be less outwardly rigid but still not as open as americans or latinos.

Thanks for the intresting fact about Russia.

I travel frequently and have learned a lot from different countries and cultures.  Irish love talking and striking up a conversation.  The Greeks are VERY friendly and welcoming....similar experience in Egypt.  The French I find are harder to cope with...they don't really like Americans ;)  Spain is wide open...pretty friendly ppl even if you don't speak the language.  However I have not been to Russia...one day ;)  Funny enough I work very closely with a developer from the Ukraine he migrated to NY when he was young...real friendly guy.

Considering it is an investment bank in NY, it must be in NYC. For NYC, the behavior you described is pretty much standard.

The same in Germany. I guess around 90% of those greeting strangers in Germany are mentally ill ...
