What Makes Gold Special?

Disclaimer - I am not a goldbug, nor a gold basher. It makes up a smallish (~10%) portion of my investments and that likely will not change. There is enough content on CAPS championing all sides of the gold as currency/hedge/useless metal issue for those who wish to explore the topic more thoroughly. I also do not want to discuss NPR's role in some liberal conspiracy or be told that they are Nazis.
That out of the way - With so much hype surrounding gold, warranted or not, I wanted to share a recent piece discussing the unique qualities of gold and what differentiates it from other elements. The discussion is not led by an economist, speculator, investor, talk show host, or central banker, but by a chemist. Thought others might find it interesting, or at least a break from some of the fights and tirades on the subject found on CAPS and elsewhere in the financial media. If there is one party that is not talking their book, it has to be a chemist.
