M3 is the broadest measure available of the total number of dollars out there, but the U.S. government ceased publishing the statistic in 2006.  If the extrapolated data on this chart are correct, then it's clear why they stopped publishing M3.  Again, I am not endorsing the accuracy of this data, and I have not looked closely at how Mr. Williams arrives at his data... I just came across the site and found it interesting.

Remember, inflation is directly related to the size of the money supply.
