I accidently stumbled across this interesting graphic breaking out the 2004 Federal Budget by department and use. Click on "Full View" in the upper right hand corner. It is four years old, but I have a hunch that it has not changed much over the past four years.

Sorry, upper left hand corner.  It's a good thing I am not a surgeon.

Apologies for all of the self replies. 2009 does not allow full view, but 2008 does.

Death and Taxes is a great production, however the $20 they charge for the full poster is a bit much.

It gives good perspective to where the discretionary budget goes. Most "conservatives" will tell you that its the social programs in the US need to shrink. That may be partly true, but the real pork is the  two-thirds of the budget that goes into global empire.

$20 seems fair to me considering the amount of effort that went into it, especially when I see pieces of unoriginal art (including prints) selling for hundreds or thousands of dollars. However, I'm not sure that I would enjoy something that depressing hanging in my home or office regardless of price.

Agreed. Our defense spending is insane, but Medicare and Social Security need serious reform. I found the pitance spent on the "Office of Government Ethics" particularly amusing. If that isn't an oxymoron, I don't know what is.

Blake,

Would you check this blog and possibly give it a boost?  http://caps.fool.com/Blogs/ViewPost.aspx?bpid=134436&t=01007737217973478225

It is an attempt to steer people to the new CAPS contest.  I think you are the probable winner at this point, so I figured you would be the obvious one to send this to.

Also, are you a policeman (from the icon)  Just curious.  My son-in-law is about to go from sheriff's deputy to police academy (it is required here to start with a minimum of 1 year as an employee in the jail to decide if you have the temperment to go on to the academy).
