During the best of the times, Miguel Salcedo’s son, an illegal immigrant in San Diego, would be sending home hundreds of dollars a month to support his struggling family in Mexico. But at times like these, with the American economy out of whack and his son out of work, Mr. Salcedo finds himself doing what he never imagined he would have to do: wiring pesos north.

Read it all at the NY Times. Our economy is troubled.

No offense but this is old news. I live in southern california and the reverse remittances and unemployment they speak of are commonplace.

Its old news to you because you live in southern california. To the rest of us (who are subject to political media bias) it is news.

outoffocus is correct. We are subjected daily to the right-wing media barrage of "illegals are stealing from us and sending all our money to Mexico" diatribes and salvos. It's difficult to have real perspective and find fact-based information when the conservative media machine wants us to buy into something.

I Agree with ease1  -  deport em...well, actually we won't have to, once our country is fully wrecked they'll be leaving voluntarily.

Man, I'm going to miss Lou Dobbs.

I wonder why are they still here? Why not go back to Mexico? I would think the life is cheaper in Mexico.

There is something else to this story. I am guessing they use US charities to support themselves, which they wouldn't be able to do in Mexico.

Border guards.

Is there a "conservative media machine"? Obviously.

I live in Florida so this is old new to me as well. It sucks having to bid contracts in Mexico because it's "where the money is".

I like it...but I'm a hopeless underdog supporter. I tend also to place bets for the likes of the Detroit Lions, Washington Generals, and the Canadian Olympic Boxing Team

Folks,

Another blog talking about the misfortune of illegal immigrants, who by definition, are illegal.  So why can we talk about it and not be incriminated the same as would happen if we were talking about the poor drug dealer/rapist etc who now needs help.  By pure definition, all are illegal and should punished by court of law.  Some how the illegal immigrant gets the sympathy.  By definition, the person who has been identified by the media as an illegal immigrant should be extradited back to Mexico.  Whiel his good intentions to send money back hoem is a heart warmer, his deed of coming over to the USA illegally negates it.  Either give the bloke a green card or send him home.
