I believe its more about product placement than clearing up a plot hole. In the Die Hard (1988) film Holly Gennaro McClane is wearing a Rolex and has a Rolex gift for John McClane, they left out the scene where the team of villains were suppose to synchronize their TAG Heuer watches because Souza rewrote the ending that includes an ambulance leaving out the syncronize watch scene because the truck did not have an ambulance inside it. In the Die Hard 2 (1990) film General Espernaza is wearing a Rolex, Col. Stewart and three mercenaries are seen synchronizing their TAG Heuer watches.

Die Hard screenwriter explains that pesky plot hole

“Originally, they get off the truck, the camera craned up, you saw them in a circle and Alan Rickman says, ‘Synchronize your watches,’” de Souza said. “They all put their arms out in a circle with the camera moving down and they all had the same Tag Heuer watch. "

Christmas time is here, and fans of Die Hard are excited because screenwriter Steven E. de Souza finally cleared up some of the films major plot holes. According to, the plot hole occurs in the "famous scene where heroic New York cop John McClane first encounters villain Hans Gruber." They hadn t met before, but in the film McClane almost immediately knew Gruber s evil intent. Fans always questioned just how McClane knew. Souza explained that originally in the script there was a subplot that Gruber and his gang were well-known for wearing a specific type of watch.
