LOL, you can always ride it out a little bit in the morning when the US exchange opens. Just be careful. Might last 5 hours. Might last 5 seconds.

I've always felt bad about making profits on disasters since I made a killing on oil stocks after Hurricane Ike in 2008.

GMX,

Don't feel bad..you didn't cause the Hurricane.  It was going to happen anyway, might as well profit.

I shorted a few, but not Japan. Sold everything in all my real accts last Thursday. Saw this coming in the charts, blogged about it today, didn't get one recommendation, lol! Doesn't even show-up on the Blogs page for some reason. Oh, well. I don't trade news, I trade price movement using technical analysis. Bearish crosses, technical breakdown, I'm outta' here, lol!

As luck would have it, I have been short EWJ for months.  It has only recently become a profitable position.

Be careful about shorting them in CAPS since you have to wait 7 days to close the position and they might bounce back before then.

The comments on this board are sickening.  Someone needs to tell some of you that statement such as "as luck would have it..." that you were short Japan are simply an indication of a soul-less human being.  Think for a moment if you had a tragedy that killed most of your family, and then had to hear about others gloating because they happened to take a life insurance policy out on your family.  There are so many trading opportunities, you need not be such a bottom feeder that you must scrape money off of the most dire human tragedy.

You've been here since October 2008, and this is your first contribution to CAPS?

Go away.

1. Bad karma...and you would be guessing.

2. There are likely more investors than ever ready to push money into Japan since these contrarian plays have been somewhat successful over the past 12 mos.

3. The Japanese gov't can also prop up equities in the short-term to soften the landing.

4. Shorting silver is more profitable : )

5. If you are going to make money shorting this situation (or any other) I think it needs to be played over time with conviction.

Kdakota, that's right.  I've been reading this board for 3 years, and never have I found such an insensitive and objectionable "comments," from people who pretend they are "investors."  Yeah, anyone can ride a stock down tragedy...no brain power needed there. It's appropriate on this board to discuss investment strategy in light of current conditions, but making statements such as "for the love of f****g God why didn't I short Japan," and "as luck would have it I was short," sickened me to the point I had to write.  Clearly something I said twitched at your soul so much you felt compelled to tell me "go away."  I'm pushing this out to my media friends and hope these posters will be held accountable for your depravity merely days after so many thousands have lost their lives.  Godfrey just lost his job for saying only 10% of what you guys said on this board.

Hey Valyooo,

Sorry did'nt see this until now.

I would not be kicking myself in the arse for not shorting japan-

Bad mojo man. Personally I think all shorting is bad mojo but I know it's neccessary for effecient markets. (Hmm...do we have such a thing anymore...)

What you should Kick yourself in the arse for is if you don't wait for the bottom and buy on the recovery.

If you refuse to do this, I'm suggesting that you walk around wearing nipple clamps as penance.
