The Transportation Department distributes regular summaries of sales from the clunkers program and has used the electronic sales information from dealers to bolster arguments that Americans are dumping gas guzzlers for gas savers. But its failure to release detailed records means the public can't verify those claims.

"Today almost 200,000 new fuel-efficient automobiles averaging 25 miles per gallon are on the road instead of gas-guzzling trucks and SUVs," LaHood wrote on his official blog just before Congress voted to spend $2 billion more for the government rebates last week.

excerpt: (AGI) - New York, 12 Aug. – Last week U.S. oil reserves increased by 2.5 million barrels to 352 million, compared to the 700,000 expected by analysts. The figures were issued by the US department of Energy. Petrol stocks instead dropped by 1 million barrels to 211.9 million (compared to an expected drop of 1.3 million). Stocks of refined products increased by 800,000 barrels to 162.3 million, compared to an expected drop of 200,000.

my thoughts: Every week or evey month we here about how we are trying to get away from the reliance on oil and every week or month I hear that analysts expect our oil reserves to drop. Isn't it odd that every time they say that, the report comes out that our reserves actually increase by a couple million barrels. They must be batting a big fat goose egg on this one.

The one thing I never see is the fact that they are working on supplying vehicles that do not rely on gasonline. The technology is there, but the US government is just blowing smoke and isn't truly committed to the idea of getting us off of oil.

With how much we are putting out for the cash for clunkers program, I imagine we could have shown the same amount to start producing and harvesting cars that run on hemp seed oil. I know, the hemp seed oil thing is getting old....but if the government was truly committed to getting off of oil, then I believe the hemp seed oil should be given a chance.

I guess we can only hope for change in this arena.  The cost for the programs by the government are mis-aligned with the outcome that the US citizens deserve. I know there is some benefit from the cash for clunkers, but I think we could see better results with real programs that do not have cars running on gasoline. With the amount of money spent on ethanol alone, we could have real commitment in hemp seed oil that would be front running with gasoline at this time.

For many, any "Big government spending program" is derided ahead of time as the ultimate evil. Listening to Rush, Glenn Beck, and Sean Hannity, they angrily rail against the cash for clunkers program.

But how about the huge financial losses due to the misguided Iraqi war, over 700 foreign military bases, 1000's of injured Iraqi war vets that need lifetime care, the insane lending practices of the banks, and the multiple disasters of "free market reforms", and the Bush era biggest government expansion we have ever seen? No one seems to look at the balance......

By comparison, the measly "cash for clunkers" is chump change.

Well I bought a car under Cash for Clunkers. Figured might as well my old ride wa son life support and I mgiht as well cash in snce I'm paying for it anyway.

Kinda sad my old Explorer has to be destroyed in the process though, seem so wasteful. I was hoping to get 300,000 miles on it but the repairs on it would have been more the the Blue Book value on it since the fuel filter was shot to h-e- double toothpicks. That and thedriver's side door seemed to think locking is an optional feature.

Re: Hemp Oil- What do something sensible with long term value? that's crazy talk!

You know what we need to start a Hemp Oil lobbyist group. I'm somewhat serious.  probably the only way to effect change in Washington is to buy it.

yep. closed all the picks. Remember what happened last year after I closed a bunch of picks:) It took a little bit, but it was at the top with a margin of safety. It seems even bears are turning slightly bullish right now:) Also, I haven't really started any meaningful commentary with any new caps players in a long time, so I am just going to stick with posting and communicating with other caps players that are familiar with me. I think the rating on the site is a little overrated anyway. Even if you are in the top 2% of caps players, it really doesn't mean squat, so what was the point. I figure I will throw in some real picks when I am ready and try to stick to a solid folio that others caps players that know me will be able to discuss. I am really just trying to get more out of the caps experience. I think TSF has done that for me. I will still be hanging around, but I figure taking all the 70+ picks that I had active out and going with just stocks that I will be investing in will be more meaningful for me and others. I hope anyway.

300,000 miles for an explorer is very optimistic. What did you end up buying anyway. I agree with the HSO Lobbyist group. I have been looking at other areas as well. One being the right to life......I think it is a worthwhile cause for me personally. I have been around young kids when teaching and understand how naive most are. I have services that will help that arena, which I am offering at this time. HSO could be something that could start as a grass roots in the midwest for a stable ag crop. I think it could be a great campaign for any politician in Michigan personally.

good deal man Just wanted to make sure everything was ok.

Seems like a high % of my buddies/favorite players have bailed in the past thre months

no one seems to have noticed but it's been a while since I've seen Everydayinvestor, VTEEngineer, Rudolphsteiner,luvb2b, Dwot, Demondoug, floridabuilder, TMFDeej, Specbear. TDRH and The garcipian is still barely here (considering what he told me is going on in his world i think he is being smart), people come and go in things like this of course, but it seems like a lot at once.

If you, binve, AC and Stockspreadsheet ever pack it in, I might as well.

Re: the link WHOAH that could be potentially explosive if the CAPS blogosphere gets ahold of it. I'm going to stay away from that one.

The others are always fun. Did you check out binve's other blog site? I posted it somewhere on here the other day.

as for the blogoshpere, I think it would be a fun thing to implement. that way the recs are given credit. You saw how many were lurking on your post about everyday. That is great, but it would be something else if blogs that had high recs were more aligned with good information. I really don't care if they publish the recs on the blogosphere or the discussion boards. It doesn't bother me and in fact I think it would cut many people out of the displayed posts for high recs personally. Not a big deal in my book., but read the post, it is hillarious with all the reasons why not to display it.

Floridabuilder used to use some sort of program where he could track IPs to see who was reaidng his blog. I rmember he used to clal out guys by name e.g. "Hans why did you not rec my blog?"

Yeah lurkers are funny. I figure if I had that many clickthroughs then it's kinda surprising that A) they are many  likley non CAPS players b) they are too lazy to rec if they are. :)

I don't really care. recs are nice but usually I post to amuse msyelf or a few others :)

I always found it silly you could rec our own posts. I  did it once to see if it work.  It would be nice if more stock related posts were highly rec'ed instead of anti gov't rants we get a lot of these days.  So there's only so many ways you can say the same thing over and over. :)

I don't have a problem with making the rec system public either (at least I cna;t think of a reason) and think it could be good for the reason you mention, but the Fool probably could have saved 80% of their headache by letitng people know in advance. That's where the fire I think is coming from really.

Peopl sure are mad about this aren't they? :)

Yeah they are pretty upset. But if you think about it the majority of the time you really here from an internet customer is when they are upset.....happy with the product customers just don't seem to find the need to post anything about it in most cases.

I still rec my posts if somebody puts something entertaining, enlightening, or good with a comment. So usually I rec my own post:) It doesn't matter to me if people know that or not though and on the discussion board, you can't rec your own......I haven't tried yet anyway.

The government rants do get old, but occassionally they are useful.
