What is going on with this swine flu. Everyone is in a panic yet only 20 have died. I am going to try to take both sides on this so please hang in with me.

Stats for mortality:

swine flu:20            Aid virus:38,500 per week               British people/strokes:1,288 per week

This really does not compare. Yes thousands are sick. HUNDREDS of thousands are sick with the normal flud EVERY Year. So is it really that bad? Also why have 19 died in Mexico, and a Mexican student died in the U.S. Do Americans have some sort of immunity that Mexicans do not. I am eager to find the answer. On the other hand, it is killing our economy even more, although pharmacies are certainly responding. And yes, I don't blame you for wearing masks and using hand sanitizer. I did the latter. But don't you think that the media has cause an uproar. I mean think if you just saw it in the newspaper, no radio or television. You would think, "oh, i'll be careful". But no, you see it repeated and broadcasted throughout the day so many times that you think, "This is something I should be worrying about since I have seen it so many times." I am eager to hear from all of you. Hurting me or loving me, either way. And a happy and healthy weekend to you guys. Thanks for your response!

1) You are using current statistics as if they are forward looking and 2) You are comparing apples to oranges.

What people are worried about is the potential of this new influenza virus. Currently, there is only evidence that animals (swine) can transfer it to humans. However, if it mutates so that humans can transfer the disease to other humans - and given the fact that we have no defense against this strain - it could create a pandemic. More or less, a big sweep of influenza cases that we won't be able to defend against with many deaths all at once.

Aids, although a horrible disease, is mainly transferred by blood to blood contact. It is much more difficult to spread than the influenza virus.

Strokes also do not have the same pandemic potential.

Yes, thank you for posting this as I have missed some things and are open to new views; however, I do disagree on some things. The swine flu is passed from person to person. That is how it spread so widely. Scientists are worried that the virus will mutate and become immune to the drug Tamiflu. That is why they aren't releasing large quanitities to the public, in hopes that the disease won't mutate. And yes I know aids and strokes aren't viruses but I'm just giving a comparison that 20 people is not the biggest number. And I personally think that since warmer weather is coming upon us, that the flu will die out within a week. I really do not believe that it will mutate agan and suddenly infect a whole lot more people once again. Thanks for your comment.

Warm weather will not "kill" the swine flu. Cold weather makes your body's immune system weaker and more susceptible to the everyday variety flu, but the extra defense the warm weather will give your body will not make any difference if the swine flu is contagious enough. Right now it is not very deadly but the virus is spreading rapidly, and the more it spreads, the higher the chances are of mutations that can turn into something much deadlier. It is the same subtype of flu as the Spanish Flu (H1N1), which killed up to 100 million people from 1918-1920.

This in not true. See for example here:

"The virus infects by human-to-human transmission. Investigations of infected patients indicated no direct contact with swine, such as at a farm or agricultural fair."
