They've got the gold-

Many  have declared that China has eaten our proverbial lunch.

Yet China is a muti-century old county that is recently just copycating on a country that is still in it's infancy'

Historically China was isolationist.  They actually considered the rest of the world as barbaric.  Word War II kind of changed things for them.  I wouldn't say they have "eaten our lunch."  They are still dependent on the US since they are still an export driven economy.

Eventually they will switch to a consumer driven one but they have a long way to go.  They are trying to shorten it by buying up or locking up as much natural resources as they can and by stealing whatever technology they can.

Now the US can stay way ahead if we actually took immigration reform seriously and opened our borders more.  You would then see a new wave of demand and growth. But Republicans are fearful because odds are those new potential citizens wouldn't vote for them.

What precisely are they "copycatting?" Serious question. I don't understand.

America devolops products, and China reverse engineers them all the time. Perhaps stealing would have been the appropriate term.
