Apollo Investment is a regulated investment company (RIC), and, as such, required to distribute 90% of its income, which is currently yielding a fat 9%. Although the stock has been trading only since 2004, Apollo has been operating since 1990, and I believe the short trading history has the stock at a slight discount to its value. The investment portfolio is widely diversified (publishing, consumer services, healthcare, media…), and leveraged to capitalize on their valuation techniques. The recent Harrah’s deal may give Apollo wider recognition, which could provide a near-term catalyst.
