There's an inherent risk in biotech, but BIIB has the potential for several home runs. Despite some hiccups with latest product Tysabri, their revenue stream is diverse and they should recover nicely. 3rd largest biotech R&D budget ? coupled with BIIB's stated goal to invest $200 million yearly to acquire new products ? increases their odds for potential blockbuster drugs. They also have strong manufacturing capabilities, which makes them a great partner for smaller firms looking to bring products to market. Highly profitable, margins are healthy, returns on invested capital are improving. And $2 billion in net cash doesn't hurt, either. Vanguard, Legg Mason and American Funds are big shareholders.
