Already having a heavy hand in oil they have their sights and R&D money on alternative energy for the future and will be one of the few oil companies to survive beyond the combustible engine.

I'm not so sure it's in the oil companies best interest. Leaving them in charge of R&D on alternative energy is akin to leaving the fox in charge of the hen house. Personally, I am looking to companies like GE, ZBB, STP, and others to lead the charge. GE is using it's massive budget/research labs to develop the next generation energy solutions over the longer term. STP is using a lean operating business model to bring cheap solar power to the marketplace and ZBB is fine-tuning it's energy storage system to better store excess solar power generated.
