Cloud Peak Energy (CLD) is a coal company. Most shares are held by institutions. Sell-side analysts generally like it, though not enthusiastically. The stock has really been pounded lately, along with everything else. It should do well when the economy recovers. I consider the present price a bargain. The US has lots of coal, so it will continue to be used for years to come. As petroleum products become scarcer and more expensive, the cost effectiveness of coal will rise.
All of the following data is as of September 23, 2011. At the current price of $17.03, the p/e is about 9. For the last year, the high of $24.69 was set early in 2011, and the low of $16.57 was set very recently. The company does not pay a dividend.
Disclosure: I own shares of CLD in real life for which I paid an average of $17.48/sh.
Less than 1% insider ownership in a stock where the debt and current ratio numbers are both going the wrong way? The analysts can have all they want of that kind of stock, I'm not buying.
