First step, google "Peak Oil" and educate yourself on what the world will be facing over the next 40 years with respect to gasoline. I recommend www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net -- it's depressing and it doesn't necessarily have to be that disasterous, but the premises are true as best I can tell. Unless we get a reliable alternative fuel, worldwide demand will outpace worldwide production (which will progressively DECREASE). I took a trip to Brazil in February (06), their gas stations (Ticker PBR) pump regular gas, ethenol E85, and natural gas. COP's stations will still be generating cash even after the conversion pains of transition to new fuels.
