Coldwater Creek(CWTR), an upper medium previously very successful retailer of nice women's clothing and accessory items has stumbled upon hard times.
First a catalog merchant, followed by bricks & mortar mid-range fashions stores embarked on a period of rapid expansion. The expansion plan s were overly aggressive with too many units. To complicate matters, consumers became confused over the company's mixed signals. Store sales dropped, mail-order sales dropped, customers an d prior customers deserted en-mass.
IF and that is a BIG IF the company can define for itself and its market what it really is, there is great opportunity as well as great risk here. That being said - up front as it were, Coldwater Creek is a long-term, but speculative BUY.
