Devon is one of the largest oil and gas exploration companies in the US, with significant gas reserves in Texas' Barnett Shale that will give them a cheap and long-lasting source of gas within easy range of the growing American market. 90% of its reserves are in the US, which does reduce political risk. This is a well-run, profitable company. That having been said, they are primarily a natural gas producer, and we all know that prices can fluctuate (remember that hedge fund that went under because of bad bets on natural gas futures?).

For those of interested in socially responsible investing, as I am, DVN is one of the energy companies in the Domini Social Index. It has received multiple local and federal awards for environmental stewardship in its operations. It also makes significant charitable contributions.
