This is my first time commenting on any company specifically or using this feature on Motley Fool.
I know they have a lot of debt relative to how much cash they have and I know they have not made a profit in the last few quarters. That said, I wanted to put in what I know, which may or may not be helpful. One of the smarter people here at the Fool may be able to explain how this information can be useful.
I work in the aerospace industry. There are only 2 companies that make space grade cells, Emcore and Spectrolab (owned by Boeing) in the US. The US, I dare say, is a decade ahead in terms of space solar cell technology compared to other countries.
It is my belief, and I think that a lot of power systems engineers can back me up on this, that Emcore cells are better than Spectrolab cells. For one thing, their ZTJ cells are maybe .5% more efficient the comparable Spectrolab cells (which is huge in the aerospace industry). ZTJ cells are almost finished with the qualification to AIAA standards. Spectrolab won't be finished until about a year from now.
I've worked with both companies, and I know that Spectrolab consistently bids higher than Emcore on the same projects. Caveat - My sample size is about half a dozen to a dozen projects.
Emcore is a great company; their employees are highly skilled and highly motivated.
Finally, I used to be a federal employee and I've attended a lot of conferences... It's my understanding that it is in the country's best interest to have two suppliers of any product: be it solar cells, batteries, etc. and so that influences their procurement policies.
This company is not going anywhere - I don't believe that the government will allow it.
As for how the stock should be priced, I really do not know.
