Eight out of 10 Mexicans live in urban areas such as Mexico City. In the next six years, the banking sector is planning to place almost 1.5 million new mortgages. Yet relative to many countries, very few Mexicans today use banks for mortgages or day-to-day banking. Private sector credit as a percentage of GDP is a good indicator of banking penetration. While now starting to grow, is still only about 14 per cent in Mexico, very low, especially when you consider that in Canada it’s more than 70 per cent and in the U.S. it’s over 90 per cent
