Solar is a young industry, but the naysayers are wrong. It is the energy of the future. Coal, gas, oil, nuclear, etc. all fall into the traps of pollution and resource limitations that will not keep up with global demand without energy diversification. The sun comes up every day, and the more we harness that, the stronger we become as a world. Harnessing the sun is a sustainable business model in its infancy. My pick in this industry is First Solar. They're a market leader, currently, with strong global positions, that produces relatively cheap solar technology with a decent balance sheet for a solar company.
If you learn how Oil and Coal is made in the Earth's crust you will see that the idea that Solar can be cheaper violates the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Therefore, any serious scientist/engineer will tell you that Solar and Wind Energy is nothing but a scam, a bubble subsidized by govt.
Good Luck.
I have high hopes for the future of solar too, but EPS growth is expected to be negative through 2012. Until there is some evidence of a real turnaround, I don't believe there will be anything but volatility in the price of this stock. I'll check back in the fall.
Solar uses a precious resource. Water.
I took a underperform position on FSLR because of the charts not because of the business model.
solar is not sustainable energy source to produce enough energy to create solar panels. You need coal or nuclear to produce large quantities of solar panels and it can take it from there for smaller home and office needs. one can power a home, a street lamp etc etc but not big establishments
