Simply stated, this one can't fail to outperform the S&P. When gold reaches $1,650 on its way to $2,000, all of these miners will be higher, so this ETF will do quite well. For anyone who feels the gold bull is real and continuing, but lacks the time to go through the companies and pick out your winners, GDX is a pretty safe way to go.
