You know, almost every time I look into a promising future industry, be it wind power, water purification, medical imaging, I find that GE bought out the key players a few years back. This is not a company sitting on its hands and scared to take a flier on the next potential large market. It pays a nice dividend and I'm convinced has its eyes on the pulse of the future (huh?). I am adding it to my favored list largely because of its prospects in emerging medical imaging, i.e. I'm calling GE as a Biotech play. One with lots of nice profitable side industries.

Expanding their reach as a biotechnology company, GE will acquire Sweden's Biacore for 390M. I can't comment too much on the price, but have always thought highly of Biacore's technology. It is used to measure the strength (Kd) of large binding interactions like protein-protein via SPR (surface plasmon resonance).

I like the move on a pure technology basis. Biacore sales were ~ 77M USD (SEK 569.0 million) in 2005 and grew at 15% from (2004 to 2005). So the acquisition looks to be at 5X sales.

There are a lot of other instrument companies getting into SPR and others that are coming out with technologies that will complement SPR instruments. GE will have to be careful and keep up innovation and the unparallelled service that BIAcore has provided in the past (which is its one best selling point) or the others will take market share. Most of the other companies with SPR instruments are coming in with lower priced instruments and researchers are typically very critical with large outlay instruments. This will hurt GE especially if academics go for these other lower priced SPR instruments (that is were the industry people are trained).

Healthcare was week last quarter and the ABT diagnostic unit deal fell apart. Still long term bullish, but would have liked to see added diagnostics and better growth.
