I bought this one to tap into the anti-viral industry, and Gilead looked like one of the bigger players. Done well by it, so far. Here's an amusing observation: compare the stock performance during the 90s, when it was run by Rumsfeld, to its performance in more recent years. Is it any wonder that the DoD has been such a mess? Maybe, even if we do want to apply sound business principles to running government, it should be *good* businesspeople applying those principles!

Rumsfeld was chairman between 97 and 01, when he stepped down to assume the DoD post. The stock was at 3.06 at the beginning of 1997, 9.27 at the beginning of 2001, and 34.73 at the beginning of 2005. The more recent results, without Rumsfeld, are a bit better, but maybe avian flu has something to do with that?

My take on the stock is that it is an excellently run company, (many Republicans involved), and that its profits are heavily dependent on the Tamiflu sales; without those, and given my belief that the whole avian flu story is overhyped and will eventually lose its appeal, this company is vulnerable to dropping back down to the 40s, which would still make it a stellar investment over the past 10-15 years.
