Although I think the managers at public investment banks still treat their businesses like the LPs they used to be (and certainly only shareholders are forced to pay the hefty (and increasingly frequent) government fines and civil lawsuit settlements), GS is currently the Master of the Universe and as such can pretty much make their own history. I think Lloyd wants to beat the S&P, but it will not be by much, bragging rights aren't that important to him.
