Sun has heavily repositioned themselves as a vendor of Open Source software and technologies. All of their most important products (Java, Solaris, ZFS, and now MySQL with the recent acquisition) are Open Source, and their strategy, as I heard in a Tech Days keynote, is, like RedHat, is to be a value-added service provider to support vendors who choose their hardware and/or software solutions.

Sun may never return to the heady days of the late 90's, but I think that their new strategy is a much more sustainable business model than what they were doing in the early 2000's. All they need to do is follow through on their great new technologies and ensure that they don't lose their major business partners.
