Don't really follow JCP, but heard that Ralph Lauren is doing a private label for them, and they have Sephora counters (girls tell me that's good). Also, subjectively, the stores seem to be packed, so looks like JCP is finally picking up the slack.

JCP is undervalued right now. They've fallen too far in the Q1 drop of 2008.

its come down too much and is now undervalued, retail will come back as the economy stablaizes

Bad ecconomy with high gas prices and financial problems it isn't going to improve any time soon.

consumer confidence, stimulus money + school & fall = good retail news. JC Penney is positioned well in the mid range clothing category.

Strong balance sheet, will survive the downturn and recover with the economy.

After financials, I'm most bearish on retail as they're likely to see a big hit in tough economic times when people do the necessary belt-tightening. For the near-term, this is an underperform.
