The place to make major purchases of materials is at a local lumber yard. However, the place for a D.I.Y. person is normally a home improvement center where the hardware is displayed and a person can "pick and choose". These big box stores also have better hours for a person working a normal work schedule. I think the current housing problems are going to lead to a lot of people staying in their current houses and fixing them up instead of building new. Winners will be home improvement centers... Loosers will be home builders and local lumber yards. Lowes seems to be better ran than Home Depot.
