I'm gonna paraphrase Robert Kiyosaki when I say that McDonalds isn't in the hamburger business - it's in the real estate business. After all, they own some of the most valuable intersections and pieces of land in the world. They just happen to set up crappy hamburger stands on that land.

With the housing market doing as it is... Well, it just makes a short too delicious to pass up. Also, I don't like a product that sells simply because it's cheap and there's a toy playground that come with it. If the product can't sell itself without addictive chemicals, it's not a real sustainable business.

I am not a big fan of mcdonalds myself, but they have been americas most successful hamburger joint in the past. People will not be spending money extravagantly if they don't have a job. They adapt to their customers extremely well. When people started shifting towards healthy food (because they realized unhealthy food makes them die) mcdonalds was the first major fast food place to start serving "healthy" food. They are in the real estate business, but they do not need to sell their real estate to sustain their business, so they are not at all in a poor situation. Plus prime real estate locations are not hit nearly as hard by the recession.
