A strongly disciplined underwriter of insurance coupled with an experienced investor make for a winning combination. Did I mentioned they've modeled themselves after Berkshire Hathaway? I like the culture, the leadership, the business model, and the price.

Both Markel and Berkshire are good companies, they are just caught up in the current down trend. Berkshire is down 20% this year. I just went bearish on Markel on Friday.

Hi. Never looked at CAPS before; rather new with MF. Don't know if I'll even see this response (how-to, please?) but I must ask: MKL's pendulum has swung over $100 each way in just the few weeks I've been watching it. How can anyone call it a superstar? The price is good today ($389 a few minutes ago; $349 when I first looked on 8/19), but If I had purchased it on 9/19 (at $480), based on MF's 'the next Berkshire Hathaway' argument, I'd be having a heart attack! So, what gives? I get the "I like the fundamentals" thing, but they don't seem too strong to this viewer! Too much teeter-tottering for my liking! Now CX, those swings are only cents at a time. Maybe I'm just too small-time for playing the market, even with all the tools MF gives me to use! Your thoughts, please? laurie.lord@sbcglobal.net

Do not watch short term swings.Go to the site and order the annual report. This is an extremely stable and solid stock to own in the long run. Short term fluctuations mean nothing, everything is volatile in this market. Your principal is very safe invested in markel and so much the better that the stock has gone down lately, it just makes it a more incredible opportunity. Any downward trend they experience is not justified by actual trouble with their business model or profitability. After reading the annual report, your perception of this stock will totally change as compared to the MF report which had a mere page on the company and its portfolio. I am totally bullish on Markel now for the long run.
