Growth in Asia will not be what people predict, the middle east and Russia are smoking havens but Nepal actually bans smoking - other countries will severly restrict sales. Additionally domestic smoking continues to decline. There is lots of think about with this company but their growth may well be cut. Additionally there has been talk of normalizing the dividend following the Kraft spin off if the dividend falls there will be lots of sell pressure from institutions that have "dividend philosiphys". Trouble for this company , I predict looms on the horizon.

Nepal is a small country... countries like Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Thailand and Pakistan are where people will take to smoking. It i already rampant in Inida. India is going to go through the 1960's phase of US....I am stupid to do technical analysis - I use www.palmaresearch.com

A point well taken and Im not being defensive but I am very curious do you have any projections of smokers, new in Inida/China? or some of the others. My best evidence on their ability to spread is anicdotal and based on my expirence with various cultures from military travels. Specfically in relation to the oriental culture Japenese Soldiers dont smoke neither do their S. Korean counterparts and those almost intentionally seldomn do things the same. Neither do the Thai's now that I think of it. This cultures share many similar values, Im wondering if the expectation of rapid growth into the Orient will materalize? All the talk on Asia I think a great many people have already banked on it, it is a multi-decade overachiever, but all good things must........

The South Koreans and Japanese are avid smokers... I have no idea from where you got the notion that their soldiers didn't smoke, especially the Koreans, since military service is mandatory. Do you think mere military duties would be enough to make them quit? That being said, I detest Altria group on moral grounds and hope that their industry burns to the ground.

I just ended my outperform rating on Altria today, for one reason: Smokers cost countries money. Smoking related illnesses drain a country's healthcare system, and for countries like India and China which have billions of people, all that lung cancer treatment adds up to massive costs. Most of Europe is already instituting bans on smoking in public areas (You can't smoke in a pub in Ireland... go figure), and smoking no longer has the traditional 'cool appeal' in westernized countries. It's still strong in eastern countries, but I believe that their governments will not be long in instituting smoking reforms there too. It just does not make sense not to... MO's market base, unless they radically shift their business into other areas, is growing smaller and smaller with each passing year. MO might ccome up with a plan to counter this, but there are better areas to invest one's money than in a titan of a dying industry.

and the city of Boston once banned "Short People" by Randy Newman. They played it a month later.
