They bought SGP on the cheap.
SGP has the pipeline and management that MRK needed.
MRK has the deep pockets to carry through with the drugs in the pipeline, SGP did not.
Now the question is:
Does MRK have the fortitude to do what has to be done with their own management.
We shall see.
IF done correctly MRK has the raw materials to become THE dominate drug company that they were many years ago.
I'm betting they do, pressure from shareholders would help too. Consolidation in the pharm biz seems to be the trend. They still pay a decent dividend while we wait; $1.52/sh current yield 4.17%. Core pharm holding along with Pfizer, Bristol Meyers and Novo Nordisk in my portfolio
