Windows 7 is either going to be late, or seen as nearly identical to Vista. Those using XP now will see little if any reason to switch to the new OS, and some may even go to Apple. The only thing going for them is the Office Suite of software, which has been a continual winner for them, but is hardly enough to keep things going if the new OS performs worse than Vista has; and given that Dell is selling units with XP as a $120 'downgrade option', it's nigh-on impossible for Windows 7 to do worse, but Microsoft is bound to live down to expectations. The Microsoft Games division has consistently put out crap which few purchase, and the Windows Mobile OS seems destined to be turfed by the versions used by Apple, Google, and RiM.One wonders what they are going to do for cash when they release most of the Office Suite as on-line freebies in a year's time?
Microsoft Games putting out Crap! Are you insane! Halo3 was the number 1 grossing game of all time, which beat all estimates in 3 days! The XBOX has been between number 1 and 2 depending on the survey, and XBOX live is a tremendous revenue source...
i kind of agree with you, microsoft is just about out of ideas. however, so is apple. there isn't much to come up with for either company. i thank you for your input and encourage you to post a REC again. =) thanks again. however, Bill Gates has got to come up with something big.
You'v completely ignored Microsoft's durable competitive advantage which is borderline monopolistic. So what if expectations for Windows 7 are low. What else is out there? Linux? LOL. Nothing comes close to Microsoft's operating system. You'r going to lose big time with this one...
I think Microsoft is in a great position with Windows 7. The newly announced "XP Compatibility Mode" will make companies more willing to upgrade. I've used the Windows 7 beta and it's more stable as a beta than Vista was as a full release. Microsoft is not going away from corporate IT any time soon. I think it's a good bet that we'll see a 10% increase in share prices by the end of the year. I'm buying.
"I think Microsoft is in a great position with Windows 7. The newly announced "XP Compatibility Mode" will make companies more willing to upgrade."You know what else has an XP compatibility mode? XP. Why upgrade to Windows7 to get a supposed layer of XP compatibility when you can just stick to XP? There are NO features in 7 that people are demanding vs. what they can do with what they already have. This product is not compelling in the lease.
least.
I completely agree with Windows 7. Most home users will either
1- Say why upgrade
2- Will stick with XP.
Let's face it. Windows XP is the new Windows 98 when XP came out no one liked it and stuck with 98 even though the OS was already 6 years old. Now XP took that status. Homeusers don't upgrade for the heck of it. Most users are home users and only stick to the OS that comes on their pre-built systems. The only complaints you'll hear is why my 3 year old printer doesn't work with Windows 7. It is the same excuse you hear from home users with Vista. Most SMB still haven't upgrade to Vista or if the system they bought comes with Vista they will downgrade.
Shall I say the same thing about Microsoft Office as well?
Fools!
Software changes over time, with new hardware, new services, new technologies... OSs are living beings that will continue to evolve (even as more cycles move to the cloud). The desire to stick w XP is a testiment to the platform's success. But life must and will move on...
Before you start deciding whether or not people are going to upgrade, install Windows 7 beta and judge for yourself. Personally, I think it is AWESOME and am confident that both end users and enterprises will too.
windows 7 is a far superior product than vista for sure. it adapts to your program so if you have a printer that likes xp service pack 2, you get to use that encoding to allow it to work. expect everyone and thier dog to make the big jump to windows 7. they also have a touch tech. to go along with 7 to make tablet laptops a big hit once again. i expect good things from these guys, apple will phase out and msft will rock the world for another 10 years!
With all due respect, that line of thinkng doesn't take into account supportability and a desire to move forward. XP will end-of-life support for the mainstream in the next year or so, then what? As mentioned in this post, Win7 is a significantly better OS than XP for both the enterprise and home users. XP mode shows how flexible the platform is in that you can still provide a legacy environment whille allowing folks to take advantage of the new features, UI and performace capabilities. Enterprises will benefit greatly from XP mode for compatibility reasons for legacy apps, Direct Access for remote connectivity to their corporate networks without requiring a VPN. Home users will benefit from the more intuitive and adaptive abilities for things like printer setup, etc. As suggested, just try the beta out, kick the tires yourself and then make your decision.
Notice the player ratings of the players making positive comments. Nuff said.
7 is great.
Well it's on time and folks are lining up to pre-order win.7
@caronhalt, that doesn't mean that MSFT will outperform the aggressive index for the near term. Windows 7 is expensive, and relatively few of the total number of XP users will migrate if for no other reason than their systems cannot support it! Windows 7 is still a severe resource hog in comparison to the older OS. New hardware will be sold with Win7, but that is also discounted and provides MS lower overall profit than boxed copy sales. They will not get the XP migration they desire or project.
