Yeah, I'm still stubbornly shorting the energy patch on my slowing-growth thesis. A terrible bet so far, but it's going to take decent economic data to change my mind.

Bad idea to short oil for deep water drillers. Agree that shorting spot market oil (and gas) companies probably isn't a bad play, but the deep water guys generally lock in prices for longer terms. Note how stocks like NE and RIG have held up during the price decline in oil lately (say the past year). Volatility (up or down) is what is driving prices up on deep water drillers, and long term shortages / interuptions in supply. See JSB8000 post below which summarizes it up pretty well.

Nah, this isn't a spot-oil play. I think the economy is going to slow enough to pinch everything at the margins, and that includes the gold-standard drillers like NE and RIG. I don't expect them to drop as much as, say, the refiners will if crack spreads get hit for a while, but I do expect their prices to ease some. And hey, I'm comfortable being wrong now and then in CAPS. The reward for maxing out your 200 picks is so great that the occasional loser is an oh-well shrug here. In the real world, I am not short drillers.

I'd rather make money, and am, than worry about my ranking in CAPS.
