Look at what netfilx has done to Blockbuster and Movi Gallery so far. It's still a tiny company with much more room to grow.
I remember back in college, we had a guy from Sprint speak to us. I was in Kansas City where the Sprint HQ is. He talked about how their goal was to get every household to own a cell phone. That was hard to imagine ten years ago where I knew only two people with cell phones.
A professor commented, "you mean that tiny little thing can do what my chunky old phone and answering machines can do?"
I can't imagine every household ordering their movies online and having them shipped to their house at this point. But do you know of any household who doesn't own a cell phone?

I know this is no longer a cutting edge thought, but think way beyond shipping. Think digital delivery on demand and fully networked computer/internet/entertainment systems and home theaters all connected through you your house. Now, you can begin to see what the future for home dvd or shall I say digital movie rental will look like in the future. The technology is here, just not quite user friendly yet, nor is it seemless but it is getting there. In a few short years I think you will see whole house systems seemlessly intergrated together and movie watching will no longer come from your dvd or vhs hard copies. They will reside on a large hard drive that will become a mulitmedia server for every room in your house.

Now, what companies are currently poised or have the technological expertise to pull this off? Certainly Apple, maybe Netflix if they get some partners, Blockbuster has already been working on such with Comcast at one point, and now Amazon and Walmart want a piece of the action. Dish network is working on a VOD option. Place your bets now on what company flurishes on this future. And let's not forget Microsoft.
