Petrobras has very litttle real competition on its home turf (Brazil) which is one of the very few places left in the world where billion barrel scale fields are likely to be found in the near future. The only other two areas in the world with this kind of exploration potential are Libya and the circum-Caspian (both much more politically difficult).

I know a little something about this since I am an exploration geologist and have worked in both Brazil and Libya. They also pay a pretty hefty dividend. If you chart PBR vs XOM over the last 2 years you will see the direct benefit to the shareholder of this monopoly on Brazilian exploration.

On the other hand Brazil does have its socialist tendencies and there is the Chavez factor (Venezuala's nutbag but strangely influential leader) that could concievably infect Brazil and damage the Brazialian energy sector the way he is destroying Venezualas.

recently an informed source said that its ownership by the brazilian government may be a plus or minus, I believe that the brazilian goverments ownership is the true value of this company, huge country with PROVEN huge reserves, this is not a maybe we may find huge reserves story and then maybe we can buy the rights to pump the oil etc., the oil is there its been found and there is plenty more just waiting to be found, the oil that has been found just needs to be pumped and the oil/dollars will come flowing out many sites are already producing. As I see it the brazilian gov. has a law on pretty much all things discovered underground in the air or anywhere. Most of these laws are overlapping, bureucratic, and mind bogilling) stating that everything found belongs to the brazilion goverment. If this was a private company they would have no chance of ever completing anything, but since this company has the government thumbs up, its like having a license to print money.
everyone wants to invest in brazil, they have great beaches, pretty girls and they have never had wars or any other such unpleasant things that may interfere with the good times. The political problems corruption etc. are actually closer to the scale of some first world countries, in other words you have a stable goverment in a country everyone likes. No severe cultural difference like found in the middle east and when comparing Brazil stability with Nigeria or many african countries or even with Colombia, you can easily see why Brazil may be described as a first world country.

In other worlds you might not be able to walk around at night without getting mugged in most large cities, you do not need to worry about hearing artillary fire from the local guerilla group or worrying about someone blowing up the oil rifineries.

if the brazilian goverment keeps supporting this company, this company will continue to do great, oil will continue to rise, (ethanal is just to costly the conversion of a materiels especially food materiels into fuel have so many political, social and environmental costs that it will never replace oil) prices in corn just went up and many poor countries are not happy, the other technologies are still to costly and as long as they are not cheaper that buying a gas driven car they will not replace gas,

oil will probably come down in the near future and brazilian stocks are real hot right now, if you own do not sell if buying you might be buying on the high but in a few years it will probably be a deal at todays prices
if brazil does not pull any

nigeria, is experiencing more problems including attacks on oil ships, in an unfriendly world, the prospects of an oil rich country, that america likes could be another feather in the cap for brazil and this co.
