Here's one of those brain teasers that keeps me up at night. Who's worse, Star Scientific or Pluristem? Star is definitely more overvalued, by a factor of about 100X, but I think that's more the fault of their cult investors than their clueless management. On the other hand, Pluristem CEO Zami Aberman is absolutely diabolical when it comes to misrepresenting the potential of his placental stem cells and manipulating the share price to finance his ongoing enterprise of dilution. Maybe I should be comparing Pluristem to Jim Bianco and Cell Therapeutics, although that old story is too pathetic to bring up yet again.

Aberman predictably took advantage of his anecdotal claims that PLX cells were responsible for successful bone marrow transplantation in three instances, although there has been no clinical trial in which PLX cells were utilized for this purpose. I don't have much sympathy for those who bought into the dilutive financing at 4, since they should have known the share price is unlikely to see that level again for a while until dilution becomes necessary again. The company now has to slog through enrollment of the phase II trial of PLX cells in intermittent claudication and it is unclear if a single patient has yet been treated. I see a descent below 3 if not further as Aberman lowers the company's profile for the rest of the year.

The whole argument about why the BMT patient in Israel died, how she died, when she died is idiotic and exemplifies why most people trading biopharma do not understand biopharma. Drugs and therapies are not approved based on anecdotal reports from compassionate use protocols, so the entire BMT story should be disregarded by any serious trader. If you are buying a biopharma stock because of this type of company PR, your destiny is to be a bagholder. Argue about it all you want.
