The USA will suffer tremendously and go into recession because it will not drill, it will protect the environment at any cost, it will come down hard on big oil & driller companies (example Halliburton) making it beneficial for these companies to move operations overseas (taking jobs with them) and at the same time taxing the rich people much more (causing many more American jobs to go away). The USA will also bring the troops home, and do nothing as Iran prepares for the nuclear bombing of Israel, and terrorists will grow much stronger after we leave Iraq. In the meantime, other countries like China & Russia will continue to drill for oil and consume oil to keep their economies in much better condition than ours, turning the USA into a poor country that cares more what others think of us, and how big the deficit is, and the USA will have to beg for mercy and beg for every drop of oil that we can get, because the USA is no longer the country it was back in WWII , when we as a nation could stomach losing hundreds of thousands of troops in a war, where now, we can't even stomach losing 5,000 troops in war. Companies like rig will go elsewhere (such as Brazil), and drill for other countries, while we try to save the polar bears over here, and we invest heavily in solar & wind technology so that we can become the cleanest and poorest place on the planet, hoping that someday the terrorist will just forget about us and leave us alone in peace.

If we built more safe nuclear plants like the rest of the world, we wouldn't need all that oil.

All alternate sources depend on "IF". We are ifed out of fuel and paying the price today for bad governmental decisions of the past. "Drill where there is no oil", "Save the animal world", "The sun and wind are free" and you know more of the excuses our politicians have fed us.Oil is here today. We need to get with it and drill where it is, even if a polar bear goes to the rig for food, or Senator Kennedy has to look at an oil rig in his back yard, or Mr Richardson has to drill on an uninhabited Indian Land.Rig is limited by the number of rigs it has and keep them working even if they have to train an unemployed liberal to "run a sting."

Toby - nice rant. The one thing you forget is the inconvenience factor. Americans are all green and love the environment when oil is cheap and it does not affect them. But, wait until they have to wait in gas lines, or stop buying their lattes because gas is soo expensive. Then - turn the polar bears into oil.I give it about 1-2 years before Americans are drilling in Alaska. There is already a lot of drilling in the north central states, and new gas drilling in the east (Penn and W. Virginia). Off shore drilling has started although slowly. But, there are cheaper place in the world to get oil, and RIG is well situated to capture the continued increase in drilling.

we are suffering tremendously because we depend so much on oil drilling in the alaskan wildlife will maybe produce enough oil to meet our needs for a year and we wouldn't see it for at least ten to fifteen years don't get me wrong i my secret capitalist side loves these oil producers and drillers but the ugly side to it is we are destroying our natural world to drive vehicles. i am an environmental science student and would rather we save the polar bears than to increase oil production to sustain our unsustainable habits.

How about you put your money where your mouth is and go fight and become one of those casualties. can you stomach that?

Put your thinking cap on this one: A replacement for oil that currently exists and probably would not require much engine modification. What is it ? High proof ( 180-200 proof ) alcohol. It has been known since the days of Prohibition that cars and trucks can run on high proof alcohol. Back in the days of Prohibition it was called moonshine. The draw back is that it would probably require some modification of current engines to maximize the potential of this source. Also the government is worried that alcoholics might try to drink this fuel.If you are an environmental science student, like you say, and are looking for a good topic for a paper try this one: High proof (180-200 proof, which translates into 90-100 percent) alcohol as the future fuel for our vehicles.

Nice neocon shill there Toby...you should stop watching FoxNews so much.I really don't think that investing in alternative fuels equals our eventual poverty. Rather it would help us to become independently able to support our energy needs; and less involved in the Middle East. The enviroment will mean nothing to the average voter when they're stuck paying $5.00 a gallon.

This is the sort of thinking that really makes me begin to hate this country. Oil is equivalent to the stone age. We need to get over it. I would much rather have the country fail while protecting Polar Bears than make money, whilst the country fails anyway, killing them.

Son-You ain't thinking and your hate is about your bad learning and lack of accomplishment.Turn off your lights, air conditioning, and electricity. Eat the grass on your lawn. Walk to where you want to go.Now you are thinking.I do not want to go there for you were wrong when you had energy and you will hate hate not having it.How many polar bears did you pet this year???How many kilowatts did you consume? How many gallons of gasoline did you use?We need more oil, gas, and energy soon and later.

On Discovery Channel there was a special on Ethanol. It takes approxiamately 1 gallon of petro to make 1.3 gallons of ethanol. Ethanol may help but it looks doubtful as a long term solution.

Sean Hannity - is that you? The fact is, when income taxes were introduced in the early 20th century, only the top one percent of the wealthy paid them in order to give back to a society that they succeeded in and help out those that were struggling. Then with WW2 the top 10 percent of wealthy were the only ones that paid income taxes. By the time you get to Reagan, not only is everyone paying it, but the working class families pay a higher percentage than the wealthy. Now, with the past eight years it has become so absurd that I can best show it with two examples:1. My parents have worked 2-3 jobs each their entire lives, but because of their education, they never made more than 34,000 a year. This past year, they paid 33 percent income tax, 4,000 dollars in house taxes (which has doubled in the past 5 years), sales tax on nearly everything they buy (even gas!), tax on their utilities, etc. Now, as they are heading into retirement, they can barely afford the deductibles on their health insurance, let alone anything else. 2. My close friends father made over 500,000 a year and swears that he has not paid a single tax dollar since W. took office because of loopholes and tax breaks. At the same time, he received a tax credit that nearly paid completely for an SUV for my friend.3. At the same time, over 10 billion of our tax dollars have gone directly to Exxon, straight from my parents pockets!-- I guess you can argue about which is better for business --- but the current tax structure is morally wrong and has definitely taken years off of my parents lives because they cannot afford to take care of themselves. The income tax was originally instituted to help the poor, now it is used to steal from the poor and line the pockets of Halliburton and Exxon.
