Have you heard about the Palm Pre?
The Pre looks great!On the other hand, the exclusive deal with Sprint Nextel is puzzling. First, what are the chances that Pre will draw new users in? How many handsets and contracts are we talking?Second, what are the chances that the Pre will staunch the outflow of customers or serve as a 'retention' device? How many handsets and contract re-ups are we talking?Now if you add both the new activations and re-ups and equipment sales, subtract whatever 'subsidy' Sprint Nextel gives to the new customers...is that going to be enough to make a dent on the bottom line?Another question I have is, does Palm really still command that much brand presence? Aside from loyalists and true believers, I don't think so. And at any rate, do they command enough to draw people to Sprint? That said, I admire Palm for its simple, fast OS and the programs that are written for it. More developers should take a cue from their method.Sprint has way too much long term debt. Should they be successful in rolling out true 4G service in major metro and corporate markets, I think they have a chance at survival--but it's going to be a long time before I'll establish a position with a company like this, Pre or not. Palm's fortunes aren't golden, and Sprint is in deep trouble--this smells like a suicide pact to me.
We went back to Sprint because they finally got a Blackberry loaded with PTT and a camera.......YEAH....
