It is my contention that the 'old' telco's are just about to get a major suprise from the advent of a desruptive technology called 'WiMax. Of the big three wireless carriers, Sprint Nextel has the largest portfolio of licensed frequencies usable for WiMax. Sprint Nextel is not affiliated with a major local phone company. This independence makes it the partner of choice for cable companies and others looking to offer wireless services to their customers. There is no reason why the company's existing WiMax (4G) network cannot compete directly with cable modems and DSL. Additionally, Sprint Nextel could mount a devastating VoIP telephony sales campaign using its WiMax network.
