While wine sales have been eating into beer's market share, Sam Adams' business has remained pretty steady. Its best growth days may be behind it, but it has a very loyal following and continues to put out a consistently high-quality product. It doesn't hurt that Jim Koch and company never seem to tire of trying out new flavors, blends, and products, no matter how off-the-wall any idea might be. A super-high-alcohol-content beer that has virtually no carbonation and tastes more like sherry than wine? Well, why not? At the very least, it gets people talking about the company as an innovator. Around here, they call companies like that Rule Breakers! Most important of all, the flagship Samuel Adams Boston Lager is THE best American-brewed beer, hands down.

You poor soul!

You still think Sam Adams is a good beer? Get out there and try some microbrews! Maybe something from the Titan or Stone breweries. Better yet, next time you're at Whole Foods, walk down that aisle and pick up a pack of Troegs Hopback. Promise, you'll soon move well beyond those tasteless Sammys.

You may be right about the business (though I think they're too big for their niche -- a Gulliver to be tied by all the micro Lilliputians) but if you're going to go on about THE best American-brewed beer... well, you need to compare against something besides Duffs Lite!

And that's my concern about SAM in the long run... The more successful they are with their marketing muscle, leading people to "take pride in their beer" the more people will discover that mAcrobrews can't compete for flavor. Sam flounders between Bud and Bud-Not. Meanwhile, the newly enlightened beer-drinkers will continue to discover... http://beeradvocate.com/acbw/2006/beers.

IMHO, of course... drink what you like, and like what you drink. Cheers!

The craft revolution of the 90s which has left us with over 3500 brands has changed the market. With so many brands and so many different tastebuds, SAM can no longer lead by product alone. It's creating stronger distributor relationships to continue growing by better product placement and increased sales. I don't think promoting quality beers hurts SAM because it benefits other craft beers as well, some will stick with SAM, some not, but you have to advertise!
