Exactly! Makes the game seem really silly. Not that SCSS is good or bad, but it's such a darling of the game. But perhaps this is how the Street really works.l.

I keep mentioning this on the boards but I think I'm perceived as being negative. Far from it. More intelligent algorithms can be used which don't reward the bandwagoners. For example, if N% of a persons picks occur within N days after those picks were chosen by N% of the top players, then that person should get almost no reward and their selection nearly discarded by the CAPS stock rating system. I think the stock rating system itself is virtually useless, as is the bull/bear count. Are the SCSS/BWLD darlings of TMF really the best stocks in the entire TMF universe? I'm starting to play with different ways to ferret out data, such as sorting on the worst 30 day returns and the worst yearly returns, then working backwords from there to locate value plays. But the great thing about CAPS is data gathering. Once we have it we can play with it any which way. Hopefully they are gathering every single ounce of data possible, so they can later revise their ratings algorithms.

Maybe it does, but I've owned Select Comfort since before the mold scare. I'm not much of a bandwagon kind of guy.

Bandwagon? I don't need no stinkin' bandwagon! I've been a Hidden Gems subscriber for over 2 years and own it for that reason. Probably a chunk of others here, too.

It makes sense that the stock with the most people pitching it will have a lot of followers. Obviously a person is more likely to be interested in a stock where a million people all reccomend it as opposed to some boring stock with two people rating it. It piqued my interest and inspired me to look into it. If I hadn't noticed it in one of the most frequently rated lists I probably would have passed it by completely. I think thats the whole fun of this game. It opens your eyes to stocks outside what you are familiar with.

I'm not sure if this is a downside or not. Two observations, though.

First, whether people know it or not, following the leader adds a good chunk of risk to your call. If you don't do the research, you can blow it. And, what's worse, since ranking is against not only the s&p 500 but also a ranking against one's fellow players, following the heard ain't gonna give you an edge against fellow players. I know in my case, when I started there was no one bearish on RIO and by doing the research ( and getting lucky ), my bullish call on RIO has played well against both S&P 500 and against other players. And that is all ok. I think the extra risk from blind picks factors in at the end of the day and it is all cool.

Second, half the fight of building one's portfolio is filtering down the possible selections to a manageable chunk of candidates; and people do that by and large by looking at what considerations and what calls have payed off for other people. The "payed off" part is at least short term transparent here and so that is artificial to some extent; but it is also very much like what a lot of us do by reading the MF boards or subscribing to various MF things or reading Barrons or WSJ or whatever. So if that is a downside to this game, then it must be a downside to real investing as well? Dunno.

I suspect that even here playing follow the leader exacts a price. Plus it isn't nearly as fun. Plus you lose part of the real value of the game ( which would be doing the damn research once other players have pointed you toward possibilities that pass your filters ).

Bingo -- because I am a novice to investing, I bought SCSS on a Fool-ish recommendation. If I waited to learn everything there is to know about investing (and can anyone, really) I'd never have started at all. I don't know anything about "band wagon" investing. I am my own person and always will be. But I'm not so "foolish" as to start making investments with no advice at all.

I reiterate my original post....CAPS just bit 500 gamers in the a$$. Know your stocks. I'll be looking at this as a buy opportunity for real $$$, which to date I have no actual position.

If you are new, this is a good entry point. Likely won't move for 30-90 days. But long term, its going up from here.
