This fall Organon (now owned by Schering-Plough) will bring to market a new drug which will forever change the way neuromuscular blockade is acheived during surgery. As it is now, patients under general anesthesia receive muscle relaxing agents (paralytics, typically vecuronium or rocuronum) that must ware off before the patient can be allowed to wake up. The current reversal agents available have many untoward side effects and are not always reliable. The new drug Organon has produced (sugamadex) works to reverse the neuromuscular blocade within a minute and from very deep levels of paralysis. The side effects are minimal and the reversal lasts until the neuromuscular blocking agent is removed from the body by the kidneys. This will save considerable OR time and increase patient safety. Within a year of hitting the market I think you will be hard pressed to find anyone not using it. For this reason SGP is a steal below $20.

On Friday an FDA advisory panel advised against approval of Sugammadex citing a few patients who had an allergic reaction to the drug. This doesn't mean that it won't be approved but it's uncommon for the FDA to vote against it's own advisory panel. More studies are needed, meanwhile the drug is approved for use in europe so we will see if they have any problems.I bought SGP for the trade so I closed my position and took profits when this news came out, but I would re-open a position if they share price falls enough. SGP remains a solid company and I think there's a good chance that Sugammadex will eventually be approved for use in this country.
