Eddie Lampert uses a value based philosophy. His hedge funds required a 5 year commitment because it often takes a few years for the investments to reach their value.

I also like that he is trying to make the retail part work. Too many people felt he was going to use the cash and real estate to make SHLD a hedge fund. As a value investor though he needs a steady income of cash so that he does not have to sell his holdings to purchase new opportunities. Sears does not have to beat Target and Wal-Mart, They just have to regularly create positive cash flow.

I think he will get there. If not it is pretty near it bottom at this point

If he's trying to make the retail part work he's sure not trying very hard.. Or very well.. The real estate isn't selling, and neither is the merchandise. K-Mart is an albatross on the company's neck, giving it extra trouble on top of the trouble it had already. There's plenty of room left in the cemetery to bury Sears - they can just stick it in the ground between Sharper Image and Circuit City.

The retail part can be made to work. The problem is he has two brands competing directly with each other
( Sears and Kmart) He should turn the unsuccessfull Kmart brand stores into Sears stores. Don't get rid of the people who work in the Kmart stores just switch them over to the Sears side. Transfer the Kmart pharmacy over to the Sears side. This will leave him with a strong Sears brand ( department stores, optical stores, auto care stores etc.) and The Great Indoors brand which competes with some of the furniture stores.

As for beating Target and Walmart, Sears Holdings needs to improve its customer service. If they do this they can become the number 3 or even number 2 player.

Eddie does not care about the retail part. He got 10 billion of real estate for 2 billion out of the Bankruptcy and has sold sites of good stores to other retailors. Now it is hard to find anyone to buy Sears and Kmart sites for top dollar. He is running out of time, but will find someway to survive at the expense of the KMart and Sears employees. He will also cost those who paid top dollar for his shares and........

Aren't they number three now? If not, who is? I'm talking about broad retailers, not speciality places like Home Depot or Kroger. Who else is out there nationally besides TGT and WMT?
